When he died seven years ago, he left the island to his eight surviving children. He had explored the idea of building an eco-friendly hotel on the island, and now, his children have picked up where he left off.

Possibly from as early as 2013, a brand new hotel along with 47 bungalow villas will be up and running (although we can only imagine how much it will cost to stay there)…

Brandon’s eight beneficiaries have made sure that any construction remains true to their father’s desire to preserve the island, and the hotel is likely to be the greenest in the world. They have also financed various nature projects, such as the breeding and release of turtles.

Could this be the next destination of choice for an exclusive group of the super-rich?

Budget cuts change holiday habits

Perhaps unsurprisingly, research conducted by TripAdvisor has found that 53% of parents will be spending less on holidays this year…

It also found that more parents are taking their children out of school in term time in order to get cheaper holidays. Apparently, schools have the right to fine parents for doing this – up to £2,500! This doesn’t seem to either discourage parents or encourage schools to react to the situation.

Does it really matter? Does the odd week here or there really make a huge difference to an education? Or are the budget cuts going to impact on the continuity and coherence of the school year? Whatever the effect, surely this will be on the increase now as people desperately try to keep their family holidays.

Holiday in Newquay

My friend has just been telling me that she went to Newquay for her last holiday with nine of her friends because they couldn’t afford an overseas holiday. She said it was amazing though, even though the hotel they stayed at smelt of dog apparently. They had surfing lessons and the hotel had a bowling alley in it. Apparently it rained the whole time and she disappeared one afternoon and the lifeguards were searching for her, however she had just gone round the corner to have a brew. How strange. I’d recommend doing it definitely, it sounds like a cracking weekend full of fun and frolics.

Check your bike rack when holidaying in the UK

When going on holiday in the UK with the kids you may want to take bikes with you to enjoy bike rides around the countryside. If you do decide to take them, make sure they are securely fastened to your car. My friend took her son for a week at the seaside in Abersoch a few months ago and on the way down whilst driving at 60 miles per hour on a dual carriage way her bike rack came loose from her car and the whole rack and both bikes went flying into the road. It was horrendous and completely remarkable that there were no cars behind her at the time. Check your racks people!

weekend break spur of the moment

Spur of the moment decisions are always good but when you get the weekend off for your birthday and your friend does the same, why not nip down to the airport like we did and get a flight out to somewhere amazing for a crazy weekend of fun and frolics! Last weekend we went to Manchester Airport, told them we had £70 return and booked two return flights to Palma. We arrived, got a taxi to central Palma and found a hotel. We then had an amazing weekend and returned on Monday (we had booked it off work!). Try it sometime.

Amsterdam for New Year

A large group of friends and I are going to Amsterdam for New Year this year! How exciting. Most of them are booked up and it’s just left for myself and my best friend to book on payday and it’s all set! She looked on the net last night and actually there are some very good deals. We’re going on the 30th December and coming back on New Year’s day (which means we don’t have to take any holidays from work – score!!) and also means i’ll have had three foreign holidays this year and also on the first day of 2011 i’ll have had my first of next year! Brilliant! Here’s to four holidays next year!

American food

Well i’ve just come back from New York and not having been to America since I was fourteen, I had forgotten how massive the food is over there! If you’re often hungry, can put more away than most of your friends and are the hero at all you can eat places you want to get over to the US. The burgers were bigger than my head at most of the joints we went to, a portion or onion rings included about 30 huge onion rings and three massive tubs of dip and the pizzas, well I could have stuck a twig under and created a tent!

Expedia, the travel booking site, has announced a specialised version of the popular Internet Explorer 8 browser which will provide more travel-oriented features built directly into the browser. They hope that this will give them an extra edge over their competitors by offering cheap deals and extra information straight to the customer.

View Sleeping Beauty’s Castle – some say that St Hilarion Castle was the insipration for the castle in Disney’s famous Sleeping Beauty. It is a steep climb up a narrow road that ascends to over 3,000 feet. Many say it’s worth it just for the view.
