Eating Abroad

Eating in restaurants in holiday destinations is a millions miles away from eating in restaurants back in the UK. Apart from the prices the food is always freshly cooked and secondly and most importantly the service you are given is second to none. Always polite and always with a smile on their faces, they are happy to oblige to any requests no matter how small or large it may seem. Restaurants back home could do worse than to look at how other countries approach table service and how they look after their customers rather than just accommodate them.

Don’t lose your passport and tickets!

When travelling abroad why do we always feel like we need to clutch our tickets and passports like they are the Holy Grail? Is it because we can’t bear the thought of not being able to jet of to our holiday destination or is it because we are being security conscious. Either way the truth is thousands of people each year lose their passports or tickets whilst on the way to the airport despite checking many times before they leave the house. Whether its lost in the taxi or dropped outside the house be careful as nobody likes getting to the airport and finding they are unable to go to that idyllic sunny holiday destination.

UK or abroad?

Is it best to holiday in the UK or abroad? Going to sunny climates may seem idyllic but is the stress of getting to the airport and all that waiting around really worth the hassle. If you go on holiday in the UK you generally get there in a few hours with no long queuing and get all the luxuries you would expect, but abroad you make do with lower standards of living. It would be a very tough choice but with millions of people doing both every year it would seem that many of us are still very divided.

Real Madrid To Launch Disney-Inspired Theme Parks

Real Madrid, one of the superpowers of world football are planning an audacious bid for further domination – this time in the theme park industry. Not content with spending more in the summer than most football clubs will spend in 5 years worth of transfers, namely £225 million, they are planning the first theme park near their training ground base at Valdebebas, north of Madrid. The theme park is predicted to cost £135 million.

Club president Florentino Perez recognises that Spain also has 146 theme parks and that Madrid is a capital of football, but he is not content with just opening up in the clubs homeland. He also has ventures planned in Miami and Beijing. Real Madrid have a big following in the States and in China so the theme parks would suit their legions of fans and have a real appeal.

With ‘brand Beckham’ a few years ago and now Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka signing for the club I can only imagine the goofy cartoon alternatives to Mickey Mouse that may be the mascots at the new theme parks!

Smokeless Cigarettes On Ryanair Flights

The flight company Ryanair has introduced a new gimic to attract holiday makers to use their airline – smokeless cigarettes. I remember when I first started going on holiday as a kid when there was the choice of smoking and no smoking seating on the aeroplane. It has all changed since then, but the innovative idea by Ryanair should be quite appealing to all smokers.

Passengers can now get a nicotine fix on the plane as part of a month long trial by the airline. The cigarettes are apparantely smokeless and odourless, but some passangers have complained that they are not a satisfying as the real thing. The cigarettes apparently release a small amount of nicotine when inhaled. However a survey by the airline saw 24,000 people welcome the new concept so Ryanair could be the airline of choice for smokers. The brand is known as Similar Smokeless Cigarettes.

Planning Your Next Ski Holiday

I tend to go skiing every year with a group of 10-15 people of varying experience and age. I love ski holidays and have ventured far and wide throughout Europe over the last 4 years. One of my favourite skiing breaks was to Kitzbühel in Austria, where the nightlife really is second to none.

Each year, around January Kitzbühel hosts the Hahnenkamm which is a world famous downhill race. The event attracts ski enthusiasts and tourists from all over the world and the resort is a ‘must visit’ on the ski tour map. One of my friends went while the Hahenkamm was on this year and said the atmosphere was amazing.

And for Apres Ski, look no further than “The Londoner” pub. Check any review site talking about Apres Ski and nightlife and you can bet that “The Londoner” gets the recognition it deserves. But don’t blame me if you get a bit carried away with Jagerbombs and stumble home in the early hours and wake up with a sore head.

My one word of advise would be to check the snow report before going on your skiing holiday to Kitzbuhel as it’s a low resort and snow is not always guaranteed – it had a bad year a couple of years ago because of the lack of snow. But this year there was loads of the stuff.

Finally – the skiing isn’t bad either!

Make Sure You Don’t Forget Your Passport!!!

When you are going on holiday, my advise is to always get a holiday check list together so that you don’t forget anything. Usually the blokes holiday checklist is a lot shorter than that for the woman in your life. As I’m a bloke, I’ve decided that it’s my duty to ensure that you all take the essentials with you so that you don’t get off to a bad start on holiday.

My brother recently went away with his girlfriend and upon arrival in Cyprus one of their bags didn’t turn up, so his girlfriend was without her case for 3 days. Therefore it may also be a good idea to share the packing with your girlfriend by making sure she puts some of her stuff in your suitcase and vice versa – just in case.

Not for the list:

Passport

Money

Travel Documents / E-Tickets / Travellers Cheques

T Shirts

Shirts

Jumpers / Jackets – in case the weather is not going to be great

Shorts

Swimming Shorts

Jeans

Sandals / Flip Flops

Towels / Beach Towels

Trainers / Shoes

Sun Cream / Lip Balm

Aftersun

Toiletries

Caps / Hats

Socks / Underwear

That’s pretty much it – unless you’re off on a ski holiday or backpacking around the world for a year, if you take the above then you can’t go far wrong.

Have a great holiday and feel free to add anything to my list with your comments if I’ve missed anything.

Holiday Of A Lifetime To Australia

It’s not very often that you get enough time in your life to go to the other side of the world for a holiday. I’ve been on skiing holidays, relaxed on cruise holidays and walked until I can’t walk anymore on city breaks but one of my favourite holidays ever has to be to Australia.

My Australia adventure was part of a 9 month trip away with a mate from University and we stopped off at Hong Kong for a week, before continuing on the Oz, then New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore then to Thailand.

I was in Australia for 5 months and we stayed with a couple of girls we new from the UK in Sydney for 2 months before buying a car and driving around 26,000km of the country with another mate and his girlfriend. We went to Melbourne, Adelaide, Broom, Darwin, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, and Cairns before working our way down the east coast. I have now seen more of Australia than many Australians, as I’ve been to every state, bar Tasmania. I’ve been to New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland, and would one day love to go back and travel in luxury rather than in tents and hostels.

So, if you have a spare year, perhaps just before University or just after, I’d take the opportunity to go on a gap year because you may not get chance again until you retire.

Fly In Luxury With Emirates

If you are thinking of the perfect holiday, or perhaps a honeymoon to truly remember, look no further than Emirates. The Dubai airline offers flights that are truly out of this world. You can check their website for all the pics but I’m just going to provide you with a small dose of whats on offer.

Firstly the food is not the normal microwave stuff (although I actually quite like it). You get your own chef cooking up a storm with proper portions fit for a king. The new Airbus A380 is set to revitalise air travel and Emirates are not holding anything back.

There is generally a choice of standard class and first class. Standard class doesn’t look too bad to be honest. The list of facilities on the 2 deck air bus includes:

Flat-bed suites that are situated near the front of the air bus

Minibar which is electronically controlled

An onboard shower spa room

Top of the range inflight entertainment

A Gourmet Chef

Many features to help travel fatigue on long haul flight

Go Horse Riding in Turkey

I’ve recently come back from a week long holiday to Oludeniz in Turkey and had a whale of a time. There is so much to do and the resort is lovely. It has neat hotel complexes with a mix of budget and luxury apartments, good size swimming pools, awesome cuisine (try the kebabs!) and red hot weather throughout most of the year.

The activities you can do range from boat trips, hiring pedelos, and speedboating (I did this for £100 and got 6 hours on undisturbed fun speeding round the coastline) to paragliding and horse riding.

Since we had already agreed that we’d do a day on the speedboat, we decided to go horse riding for something a bit different as well. It was really fun and there were choices of 2 or 3 hour trips to different locations. We opted for the 2 hour trip (my girlfirend wanted to go for 3 but settled for 2 after looking a my reaction to the horse that would be transporting me throughout the afternoon). We trotted up to beautiful viewpoint in the hills where we got a fantastic view of the whole resort, blue lagoon and got some great photos. I’ve never been horse riding before but it was well worth it (only cost a tenner each) and I would recommend it if you fancy something a bit different while on your hols.
